Charismatic Jacob Umberhind poised to be one of state’s major linemen

WINTHROP — Jake Umberhind was not finished dressing for apply when he still left the Winthrop/Monmouth/Corridor-Dale locker place for an interview.

“Don’t decide me for the socks,” he mentioned, motioning to the two black socks of distinctive lengths on his toes.

Like any person would see the socks. With Umberhind, the consideration goes in its place to the strong 330-pound frame, or the calves as major as tree trunks, or the mullet that seems lifted from a 1980s sitcom.

It is a snapshot of Umberhind as a soccer player: A comedian, a character, and one of the ideal linemen in the state.

“I just like dominating more than persons,” reported Umberhind, a senior. “It’s just so enjoyment, to know that you can manhandle some guy and throw him to the ground. It’s so enjoyable to me. It energizes me each and every time I do that.”

As the Ramblers’ top rated guard and defensive tackle, he gets to do that frequently.

“If you really don’t double-group him, he’s heading to be in the backfield producing plays,” coach Dave St. Hilaire said. “He’s obtained a ton of vitality. Offensively, when he starts off pulling and trapping, it’s rather devastating when he blindsides a trapper. You don’t have to fear that there is going to be a maintain. Just belief Jake to make the block.”

Umberhind is the Ramblers’ Paul Bunyan, a drive who can bench press 345 lbs, squat 485 and deadlift 610, and who can toss 45-pound plates around, St. Hilaire said, “like they’re motion picture props.” He’s been a starter on protection considering the fact that his freshman calendar year, and in 2019 had a workforce-large 16 tackles for decline whilst notching 3 sacks.

“You know they’re not heading by way of his hole. They’re likely someplace else,” St. Hilaire reported. “He’s coming by and producing a perform in the backfield if you really do not have two fellas on him. There was a person play past week exactly where he was triple-teamed.”

His enjoy on the offensive line, however, has caught up. Originally a deal with, Umberhind moved to guard, to his — and the Rambler functioning backs’ — enjoyment.

“I love operating powering him,” senior Logan Baird claimed. “You just get ideal on his back, adhere to him up the gap, you are going for at minimum 5 more yards than you get with out him.”

“This 12 months, actually, I like offensive line a lot,” Umberhind added. “I’ve often been the significant tackle, but now I get to pull and smack folks in the face. It is variety of exciting now.”

Pulling on operates has come to be an Umberhind specialty.

“You get him out in place, and it is just not a fantastic matchup for little ones,” St. Hilaire stated.

He’s the pillar on the Winthrop/Monmouth/Hall-Dale lines, but Umberhind has one more job on the crew. He’s the just one maintaining the temper gentle, and breaking up the tension that in football can pile up. No matter whether it’s due to his sporting a much too-limited shirt to exercise or poking enjoyment at someone, absolutely everyone arrives away with an Umberhind story.

“Jake’s often keeping the workforce upbeat. He’s a significant, amusing person,” Baird mentioned. “He’s always building jokes and things. If a thing humorous comes about, he’s always there to maintain the joke likely. If a person of the coaches messes up on some thing, he’s choosing on the mentor.”

Umberhind explained humor belongs on a football group.

“I like cracking jokes for the reason that it is a hard sport,” he reported. “Sometimes you come to feel like ‘God, this is rough.’ You have bought to have some brightness in your existence. You are dying from the warmth and the exhaustion from a two-hour apply. I like to lighten it up a little bit.”

When Umberhind started showing up to observe with his mullet, it didn’t choose lengthy for 5 or 6 of the Ramblers to start out donning their hair the similar way.

“He relieves any pressure. He’s just a entertaining dude to be all over,” St. Hilaire explained. “He is a character. But the young ones like him, they’ve liked him since he was a freshman. I don’t assume there’s any individual that doesn’t like Jake Umberhind.”

Currently being his individual guy introduced him to an abnormal winter activity alternative. Previously a wrestler, Umberhind, who was looking for a way to retain his conditioning up, determined to give cheering with Monmouth Academy a check out.

He was as surprised as anybody to locate out he liked it.

“It’s amusing, when I say ‘I do soccer and I do cheer,’ they really don’t be expecting that considering that I’m a massive boy,” he claimed. “It’s variety of like soccer. I just love the rally of all people coming collectively and functioning as a staff, helping every single other increase more powerful to be the greatest that you can. Which is why I enjoy sports activities.”

And like football, cheering can be bruising.

“A ton of persons go ‘Oh, cheering’s not a sport! It’s not that challenging!’ Even as a soccer participant, it is in fact fairly tough,” he said. “Sometimes I get kicked in the crown jewels a several instances, and that really hurts. I get kicked in the encounter, people fall on my facial area. You get bruised up.”

Umberhind is Monmouth’s strong guy as the foundation on stunts, but the activity has also taught him a various type of athleticism. He can do a split and toe-contact, is working on a again handspring, and has acquired a versatility that has served him effectively on the soccer field.

“He’s received outstanding footwork,” St. Hilaire said. “He goes by means of an agility ladder like a running back again. He’s bought matters that big guys just never have. He’s received some resources.”

Dimensions, as Umberhind has observed, isn’t everything.

“I see men that have really large opportunity, like 6-6, 300-pound men, but they just transfer like Frankenstein,” he claimed. “It’s definitely essential to be a great lineman, you have obtained to be adaptable.”

Umberhind isn’t always so carefree. When the video games start off, he mentioned, he locks in.

“I just stare at the ground for, actually, five minutes and talk to myself,” he reported. “People consider to talk to me and I thrust them aside. I do not know why. I just acquire sport time severely.”

That’s when the character and comedian acquire a break. Right until the remaining whistle, he’s just the lineman. And a great a single.

“I believe it allows me. Each and every sport, I get butterflies in my stomach, and I’m just excited to participate in every single recreation,” he said. “Especially this year, to be in a position to play is just remarkable. I’m so fired up that this yr, we can engage in.”
